2010 Provincial Baseball Champions Congratulations Pickering Junior Red Sox & Coaches John Smeelen, Adrian St. Kitts and Doug Wilton! With a small team of only 13 players the Pickering Junior Red Sox travelled to Windsor and claimed the Junior (19-21 year old) Provincial Championship, and will now represent Ontario at the National Championships in Trois Rivieres Quebec August 18-23. The road to the Championship was paved with great pitching, solid defence and late inning timely hitting. The Sox opened the tournament with a 7-3 come from behind victory over High Park with Shaun Slemko getting the win, and strong offensive performances from Eric Wilton (2 hits, 2 runs), Jacob Featherstone (2 hits, 2 runs, 2 rbi), Matthew St. Kitts and Ryan Turner (2 hits 2 rbi) and Kyle Smeelen (2 hits, 1 rbi). The second game against East York was dominated by Sox pitcher Wayne Feltham who pitched a 2-0 shutout, scattering four hits while counting nine strikeouts and no walks. The Sox scored their 2 runs in the fifth inning on a triple from Robert Carman followed by a single by Christian Chavez who later scored on a passed ball for the insurance run. The Sox were down 4-1 into the sixth inning against Etobicoke in game three when St. Kitts walked and Turner, Carman, Chavez and Smeelen followed with consecutive hits and counted three runs to tie the game heading to the last inning. The winning run came in the seventh inning when Turner walked, took second on a passed ball and scored on a Carman single. Kyle Taylor who pitched the final four innings of scoreless relief got the win. The defending Provincial Champions from Mississauga were 5-4 victims in game four to Slemko who pitched the complete game for the win. The Sox had a huge third inning with hits from Wilton, Featherstone, Turner, Carman and Chavez, an rbi from Feltham and a bases loaded walk by Eric Watson to score the eventual winning run. The tournament favourites from Windsor were held scoreless by Taylor for the first 6 innings in a 3-2 hard fought game between the only 2 undefeated teams left in the double knockout tournament in game 5. Pickering scratched out single runs in each of the first three innings with the offensive stars being Wilton (hit, walk, run rbi), Featherstone (2 hits), Feltham (2 hits, run, 2 rbi, including the game winner) and St. Kitts (rbi). Watson pitched the seventh, which featured great defensive plays by Wilton and Turner, for the save. The only blemish on an otherwise perfect tournament came against Tecumseh in a 2-1 loss in game 6. St. Kitts pitched the complete game allowing only two runs on three hits and 6 strikeouts. Down 1-0 in the 6th Tecumseh had two doubles and a hit batter to get all the offense they would need. Andrew Nauth led Pickering with two hits and the only Pickering run came on a Wilton single, stolen base and scoring on an rbi single by St. Kitts. Tecumseh then eliminated Windsor which set up the Championship Game between Tecumseh and Pickering. In the first inning Feltham gave up a leadoff walk which scored on a two-out single staking Tecumseh to a 1-0 lead. But that was it as Feltham shut the door allowing no runs and only one more hit through six innings. Pickering tied the game when St. Kitts led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on an rbi single by Turner. Still tied going into the bottom of the sixth, Turner led off with a single and Carman ripped a triple over the centre-fielder’s head scoring Turner. The next batter Chavez hit a sacrifice fly to score Carman from third giving the Sox a 3-1 lead. Slemko came in to pitch a scoreless seventh inning to claim the save, giving the Sox the Provincial title. In the Championship game catcher Adam Corless also had two hits. Corless was vital as catcher keeping the Pickering pitchers on their games and catching both games on Championship day in near 90 degree heat. The team will now head to the Canadian Championships in Trois Rivieres representing Ontario. Team members are Shaun Slemko, Wayne Feltham, Kyle Taylor, Eric Wilton, Jacob Featherstone, Matthew St. Kitts, Ryan Turner, Robert Carman, Christian Chavez, Kyle Smeelen, Adam Corless, Eric Watson and Andrew Nauth
